disclosure: I would not read this.
Somehow I managed to look hella-hipster-ish today even though I was wearing a Chicago Medical School hoodie. I think it also helped that I was wearing hipster glasses. Do hipster doctors exist?
I started daydreaming about the kind of people I'll meet in medical school. Today's been a pretty daydreamy day, because I also thought about where I'd work and what I'd wear to see patients. My sister found a great jewelry website called Jess LC, and all the collections are named after Chicago streets, and they all have different feels which I can only assume speak specifically to the area where they are named. I'm most familiar with Division street. My dad works at St. Mary's hospital, address 2222 W. Division. In the 1970-1990s, Division street fenced in the off-again, on-again murder capital of the world, Humboldt park. Cabrini green, one of the most infamous projects in America, and definitely the most infamous of Chicago, was located on E. Division street. Today, Roger's park is the place for hipsters. Late nights in the area can be spent at Jazz and blues clubs with delicious pulled pork sandwiches, Evil Olive (a club named palindromically), fancier restaurants that close around 10, and an amazing taco place which I think may be called Taquitos or something, but which stays open until 2 AM so that drunk people can have easy access to delicious food. There's also a lot of nice stores--Threadless for Kids, a bead shop, a spectacles store, etcetera etcetera. Will I work on Division street? I don't know. But it's definitely a possibility. The Division Collection doesn't really speak to me, but the straight lines seem to reflect a time long ago and clearly on the far east side, next to the lake.
I'm a pretty eclectic person. I like learning and I like being a scholar, but I don't think I like studying or being stuck in academe for extended periods of time. I like theories, but only if they are applicable to real things. I want to work. I want to do things. In effect, I need to figure out what I'm doing this summer.
