Airport Pity
I wish that the standby list wasn't decided chronologically, but rather, depended on whose travel story was the most heart-wrenching. "I just really want to get to Key West," would not be acceptable. Mine would probably be mid-course. "I left at three in the morning to get to the Syracuse 'International' Airport, only to learn my flight had been canceled. After crying and finding a hotel room, I had to spend a day in Central New York, which yes, IS as crappy as it sounds. Some last minute ticket trawling produced a jetBlue flight out at 9 in the morning, as opposed to 4 in the afternoon (the best delta *cough, hack, sputter, die* could do). Driving to the airport again, I almost died on the thruway, than started sobbing, positive that if I couldn't make it through this snow storm, there was no chance they were letting planes out, and I'd need to spend another godawful day in snowy Syracuse while my entire EXTENDED family, some members of which I hadn't seen in years, enjoyed each others companies and the warm Floridian sun". I can only imagine one wise guy would pull the, "My mother lives in Key West. She doesn't have much... longer... Every moment... counts." But I might get bumped up a few spots, at least.
